The decision on what kind of law to specialize is likely causing a great deal of stress to those students on the verge of entering law school. While the majority will decide to be the kinds of lawyers that work on standard law specialties like construction or will and trusts, others will choose to take a bit braver route. These kinds of lawyers – those who choose to take part in newer and innovative fields – are the kinds of lawyers that are the ones will become leaders as they advance in their fields. What kind of fields offers countless opportunities to set precedence and assist in changing the way we function? Fields like health care, energy solutions, and insurance offer this and so much more.

Emerging Kinds of Lawyers: Insurance

With the law changing so rapidly, countless new kinds of law are coming into existence and evolving so much, that most law firms can’t keep up.

A recent article in The Washington Post highlighted one law firm that is able to though. DC law firm Arent Fox has successfully positioned itself as a leader in the insurance market by expanding their insurance and reinsurance unit in New York.

According to the article,

The firm hired five lawyers for the unit that will litigate cases for and against insurance companies, represent the industry in regulatory matters before Congress and advise insurers on their own insurance and investments. The firm said it expects the unit to grow substantially in the future.

New lawyers who are looking for a specialization will find that insurance is ripe with new ideas and offers. Because Obamacare is changing so much of this industry, altercations, disputes and misunderstandings are inevitable for a large segment of the public. Because of this, insurance is the perfect area for lawyers to learn more about and specialize in. The kinds of lawyers that specialize in this type of law are those will have the fortitude to break new ground and the courage to offer new solutions. These kinds of lawyers are definitely not the faint of heart.

Emerging Kinds of Lawyers: Health Benefit Insurance

Another law firm mentioned in the WaPo article on emerging kinds of law was the law firm Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, who established a practice to “help companies under scrutiny by a state or federal government.” With Obamacare seemingly just around the corner, insurance companies and doctors alike are forced to reevaluate their current standing in the system. That’s where these newer kinds of lawyers come into play. Lawyers entering law school should consider specializing in health benefit insurance because of the opportunities that the confusion surrounding the topic provides people. Anytime there is a gray line or a touch of uncertainty, consider it a moneymaker for lawyers.

Emerging Kinds of Lawyers: Energy Solutions

Yet another law firm mentioned in the WaPo article was Howrey, which expanded their law firm to house an energy solutions unit, with more than 25 lawyers focusing on matters related to the construction of nuclear power plants. With more emphasis by the media and politicians being placed on alternative forms of energy, this field is a winner for anyone who has a deep love of the environment and who loves coming up with new ideas.

There are countless kinds of law available to practice nowadays. However, insurance, health benefit insurance, and energy solutions are among the most ever-changing and newest specializations available for all kinds of lawyers to consider.
